When Pigs Fly
Welcome to When Pigs Fly, a recorded CD that features popular artists singing top hits that you know and love! Don Ho crooning "Shock the Monkey"? Jackie Chan and Ani DiFranco respectively, doing a heartfelt rendition of Nat King Cole's "Unforgettable"? Hee Haw's Roy Clark, best known for country music everywhere doing "What A Wonderful World"?
When Pigs Fly is a compilation album of outlandish pairings comprised of songs one would not expect a particular artist to perform. These songs were recorded exclusively for this project and these songs cannot be found anywhere else. The concept for the album began in response to Eric Claptons acoustic butchery of his classic song “Layla.” Tongue in cheek, I created an acoustic version of Quiet Riots “Metal Health.” When the song came out much better than I ever anticipated I was able to get Quiet Riots lead singer, to perform lead vocals. His performance was spectacular and he really liked the novel approach. That track can be found on The Neanderthal Spongecakes “The Side Effects of Napalm” and friends insist it is the greatest cover song ever recorded. The success of the When Pigs Fly – Songs You Never Thought You’d Hear project let me to do more. Rather than have people remake their own songs, I thought it would be more interesting for artists to cover other peoples songs that were very different from their own style. Since I had to convince everyone to participate, every song has an interesting story behind the struggle for its creation. The results have been incredibly well received and well worth the effort. Music forms the soundtracks of our lives. Everyone has his or her favorite song or songs that bring back memories instantly. Perhaps you first heard "Shock the Monkey" by Peter Gabriel while strolling down your hometown streets. Or maybe you cannot stop thinking about "What A Wonderful World" each time you pass the Louis Armstrong statue at the French Quarter.
Of course when you hear the song inside your mind, you remember the original artist. Sometimes, though, other artists record cover versions of classic songs. Some are great (Elton John's "Pinball Wizard") some are not so great (Uncle Kracker's "Drift Away") and some just well interesting (William Shatner's "Rocket Man"). What if you were walking down the street one day and heard songs you never thought you'd hear—the twist being that these are songs you have heard done by artists you would never think in a million years would perform?
